Soldiers arrest dozens of civilians in Mutengene

Dozens of people have been arrested in Mutengene, Tiko subdivision, Fako Division in the South West region of Cameroon.

An inhabitant of the town, writing to Mimi Mefo Info, says “…a combined military squad moved around some quarters arresting people either with or without their national identity cards.”

This happened on the night of Thursday January 21st breaking Friday, January 22nd from about 11:30 pm to 6: 00 am.

Though the military men have not stated reasons for the massive arrest carried out mostly in quarters suspected to be hosting separatist fighters, inhabitants think the move is to fish out those causing havoc in the locality.

To some people, the unannounced arrest of people is frequent in Mutengene. They accuse the military of using the method to make money for themselves.

“People arrested in the past are forced to pay 25.000f cfa to secure their freedom,” an inhabitant stated in anonymity.

Mutengene is a few kilometres away from Limbe where Group D matches for the Total African Nations Championship are taking place.

Earlier, separatists threatened to disrupt matches of the championship.
