State burial for Cameroon’s opposition leader, Ni John Fru Ndi
Cameroon’s opposition leader and late Chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) Party, Ni John Fru Ndi has been accorded a state funeral by President Paul Biya.
The information is contained in a release signed on Wednesday, July 27th, 2023.
“State burial instituted in honour of Mr. Ni John Fru Ndi, President of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), who died on June 12th, 2023, in Yaounde, after a protracted illness,” a section of the release reads.
Tribute ceremonies in honour of Ni John Fru Ndi have taken place in the US, Europe, and other parts of the world.
On Thursday, thousands are expected to gather at the chairman’s residence in Yaounde for a wake service before his body would be transported to Bamenda for burial on Saturday, July 29th, 2023.
“This state burial will take place in … Baba II, Mezam Division, North West Region of Cameroon,” Paul Biya’s statement added.

State funerals often feature a significant display of grandeur and ceremonial practices, incorporating religious elements and notable aspects of military tradition.
Cameroon has had very few cases where personalities were given a state burial.
Examples of such cases are Mark Vivian Foe and Adoum Gargoum.
Ni John Fru Ndi who died aged 82, has constantly challenged President Biya’s bad governance, and poor management of the country with the most recent being the Anglophone crisis.
