Stevie Wonder Officially Becomes a Ghanaian Citizen on His 74th Birthday

Legendary musician, Stevland Hardaway Morris, known professionally as Stevie Wonder is now officially a Ghanaian citizen! On his 74th birthday, Wonder received his certificate of citizenship and oath of allegiance at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House, the seat of Ghana’s government.

This move comes three years after Wonder expressed his desire to relocate to Ghana on “Oprah” due to “political turmoil for the US.”

Wonder’s influence spans across genres like pop, R&B, gospel, soul, funk, and jazz. President Akufo-Addo himself presented the certificate and passport to the music icon.

A Milestone for Ghana

This ceremony marks a significant moment for Ghana’s efforts to connect with its diaspora and acknowledge their contributions. President Akufo-Addo praised Wonder’s dedication to music and the African diaspora, noting his music’s inspiration for generations of Ghanaians and Africans worldwide. He believes Wonder’s presence will strengthen ties between Africa and its diaspora.

This occasion also highlights the success of Ghana’s “Year of Return” initiative, which has already seen 252 individuals from African American and Caribbean communities become Ghanaian citizens.

A Dream Realized

A longtime admirer of Ghana’s rich culture, Stevie Wonder expressed his deep gratitude and excitement to be called a Ghanaian. He feels drawn to the country’s vibrant spirit and warm hospitality.

This event signifies a major step for Ghana’s engagement with its diaspora and a recognition of their achievements. It’s expected to foster further collaboration and exchange between Ghana and the African diaspora, solidifying Ghana’s position as a center for African cultural and intellectual excellence.
