At least ten students have been injured after an explosive device went off in the University of Buea campus in Cameroon’s South West Region.
The explosion happened in the Amphi 600 Hall, while students of the Accounting department were in a lecture in the said hall.
The students who were scared of death at the time of the explosion, ran without order, causing a stampede.
Many have since been injured, though fortunately, no death was recorded. Images taken shortly after the incident showed students bleeding and others trying to regain their breath after the stampede.
Today’s explosion comes shortly after the institution welcomed the Canadian High Commissioner at the Thabo Mbeki Peace Lecture.
This has further raised concerns over the perilous security situation, as well as the raison d’être of the targetting of civilians.
The move is believed to be connected to similar explosions recorded in the town days ago, attributed to Separatist fighters clamouring for a new state called “Ambazonia”.
Authorities are yet to comment on any of the recent explosions.
