Teachers demand better working conditions, good pay as they celebrate Teachers’ Day

Happy teacher’s day to all the teachers on this platform!

October 5, is a day to honor teachers for their special contributions in a particular field area, or the community in general.

But as they prepare to observe the day in Cameroon, some have tabled a series of grievances, saying “we have decided not to eat or drink, but to use this day to express our dissatisfaction and challenges.”

“We are wise now,” said a PTA teacher at Lycée de Makenéné, who has been teaching for decades.

He went on to cite some grievances, including marginalization, the government’s failed promises, and low salaries.

“Our profession is marginalized,” he said adding that, “they keep blaming us for not applying the CBA approach whereas they can’t show or practice it.”

“The last Francophone exams like BAC and probatoire correction fees, invigilation fees, and even transportation fees are not paid. We worked hard to ensure the smooth running of exams but MTN and Orange network are the first people to enjoy our fruit of labor.”

“After intensive training, we need to spend money to be integrated, to have advancement. So we want that integration and advancement of salary be automatic,” he said.

Our source who spoke based on anonymity tabled a series of proposals:

“Let the basic bodies of education in Cameroon be renewed.”

“We are tired of celebrating this day with the pretext that all is well,” he concluded, demanding better pay.

If you are a teacher, tell us what your challenges are and how you want them solved!
