Govt Announces Temporary Blackout in Centre, South, East Regions

Electricity supply in the Centre, South, and East regions of Cameroon will be disrupted this Sunday, August 31, the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, has announced.

In a communique signed on Friday, August 29, Minister Essomba stated that a series of tests and technical trials will be conducted to ensure the optimal operation of the Nachtigal Hydroelectric power plant.

As a result, the Centre/South Electricity Zone—particularly Yaounde and its surrounding areas—will experience a blackout from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

“The operations consist of voltage recovery and separate network operation tests (island mode). The aim is to improve the security and reliability of the electrical system while optimising the integration of the Nachtigal power plant,” the minister stated.

The Ministry is mobilizing technical teams from SONATREL, ENEO, and the NHPC company to minimize the duration of the interruptions and to restore the public electricity service as quickly as possible, if necessary.

Additional kilowatts of electricity from the Nachtigal Dam could boost power supply in these regions, and potentially stem frequent outages and extend supply to rural areas.
