Tension Mounts in University of Bamenda as CCC Bank Leaves Workers Stranded

By David Atangana

There is heightened tension within the ranks of the support staff of the University of Bamenda, UBa.

Support staff of the institution, mostly secretaries, campus guards, liaison officers and administrative assistants are anticipating a strike action in days ahead over accumulated salaries that have not been paid.

Things got worst last month when support staff who usually receives their monthly salary with the CCC bank showed up for their salaries but were simply told they bank will not pay their salaries because of accumulated irregularities between the bank and the finance department of the university of Bamenda.

According to information from CCC bank, the University of Bamenda, through its finance department have in the past played a fast one on the financial institution and till now, about FCFA 15 million debts is owed the institution.

“We were told that they will not pay our salaries because the university owes them. They said the pay voucher that comes from the university every month is always faulty. One month they will send the voucher with 70 names, next moth they will send with 60 names and that how it has been. They said each time they complaint t the university, they will tell the bank to keep paying. Now they owe the bank 15 million” said Mary, one of UB support staff.

Another support staff talking to MMI, on anonymous basis says this is not the first time such a thing is happening.“This not the first time. There are moths we go to the bank and our names are absent from the pay voucher. We will have to wait for the next month and that how I a year, maternity allowances and related alliance are not paid and nobody has nothing to say. We go to work on ghost town days, takes a lot of risk and we are treated like this” she said.

Staff Union Helpless…

The support staff in the University of Bamenda have further accused the university top management and the director of administrative affairs for conniving to weaken the union of support staff in the university.

According to them, they have refused to install the president of the support staff, Bin Marcella who since her election last year have not been installed and commissioned into her functions and as such cannot fight back and protect the plight of the support staff, mostly secretaries, campus guards, liaison officers and administrative assistants
