The National Gendarmerie says it is enhancing its professionalism to maintain law and order during and after the electoral process.

As the official results are still to be declared, the paramilitary forces are conducting drills on how to curb acts of violence. The force has noted violent protests in Dschang, Garoua, and other parts of the country in response to the election results being circulated.

Following the close of voting in the presidential election on October 12, 2025, several violent incidents have been reported in various cities across Cameroon. The Gendarmerie has released photos showing its various units training.

In a recent statement, it said, “These acts of violence, perpetrated by protesters who claim victory for their candidate, have caused significant damage to property and loss of human life.”

It added, “In its sovereign role of ensuring the protection of persons and their property before, during, and after the electoral process, the National Gendarmerie is acting with professionalism and resolve to maintain public order wherever it has been disturbed.”

According to the Gendarmerie, the guiding principle behind its actions is the preservation of peace, respect for public order, and protection of the nation’s supreme interest—all essential conditions for Cameroon’s development and progress.

Political observers warn that post-election violence is likely. Ninety-two-year-old Paul Biya is attempting to extend his mandate to an eighth term. The October 12 election has been marred by widespread fraud.
