The US military accidentally sent millions of emails to Mali, a Russian ally, due to a typo.

The US military’s “.mil” domain has been receiving for years now emails addressed to the West African country with the “.ml” extension.

Passwords, medical details, and even the travel plans of top officials were apparently included in some of the hacked emails.

The Pentagon claimed to have taken corrective action.

Dutch internet entrepreneur Johannes Zuurbier reportedly saw the issue over a decade ago, as reported by the Financial Times.

He’s been paid to oversee Mali’s country domain since 2013, and in recent months he’s apparently collected tens of thousands of emails that were sent in the wrong direction.

The publication reported that the documents included medical information, maps of US military locations, financial records, trip planning paperwork, and diplomatic correspondence, none of which were labeled as classified.
