Three Ambazonia (amba) separatist fighters were killed in Sop, a locality in the Bui Division of the Northwest Region, in what appeared to be a confrontation with the Cameroon military.

According to military sources, the operation occurred on September 8, with other fighters fleeing the scene, some believed to have sustained bullet wounds.

Residents reported heavy gunfire in the area, which has become a hotspot of separatist-military clashes in the ongoing Anglophone crisis.

The military reportedly ambushed the fighters after a tip-off about their presence in the vicinity.

A military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the operation.

“We acted on intelligence and took measures to ensure the safety of civilians in Sop. Unfortunately, others escaped, but we believe they are injured and will be apprehended soon,” he said.

Authorities are conducting searches in neighboring villages, hoping to capture the injured fighters before they regroup.

Armed separatists, commonly referred to as Amba boys, have been involved in an ongoing struggle for independence in the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon since 2017.

The Anglophone Crisis, which began in late 2016 as a peaceful protest against marginalization, escalated the following year into a full-blown conflict after civilians took up arms.

In areas like Bui Division, which have remained hotspots of separatists’ activities, the army has intensified operations in recent months, signaling a new approach to wiping out insecurity as a result of the armed conflict.
