Three children are reported to have died in a tragic fire incident in Bamenda, the capital of the North West region of Cameroon. The fire broke out late Tuesday night, leading into the early hours of Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in the Ntahyang quarter of Bamenda 1 subdivision, near Blue Bar.

The fire reportedly started in the children’s room and quickly spread throughout the house before neighbours managed to contain it. MMI learnt that when the flames were finally extinguished, the children’s bodies were found, burned beyond recognition.

Shock and grief have gripped the neighbourhood following the devastating incident. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

However, in a viral video, the father of the deceased children, overwhelmed with grief, suggested that the fire may have been an act of vengeance. “I was arrested and locked up for one week by someone who claims I owe him money. I told the state counsel that I do not know this man. I came back just to wake up this morning to see my house burnt with my children inside,” the father lamented.

Such tragedies are common in Cameroon and often, there is no formal investigation launched, meaning that the cases remain unsolved.
