Today’s Major News Stories In Cameroon – February 3rd 2022

After a spirited fight, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon crash out of the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Despite dominating for most parts of their semi final game with Egypt, and keeping Mohammed Salah quiet, Cameroon failed to convert their chances when faced with the opportunities. The Committee to Protect Journalists on Thursday, February 3, joined 26 other civil society organizations to call on President Paul Biya to release all those arbitrarily detained in Cameroon for acts of free expression, including at least four journalists. The open letter, published during the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, notes that the continent’s premier football tournament masks the reality that over 100 people have been detained, most for more than a year, and some for over five years, for simply “peacefully exercising their human rights.”

Drivers plying the Bambui-Bambili stretch in the North West region have decried the horrible conditions of the road during this dry season. Drivers say the excessive dust on the road could cause accidents.

Ph.D holders in the diaspora have complained of being left out of the ongoing third phase of the recruitment of lecturers to teach in state universities in Cameroon. Some of the diaspora candidates say they have been ignored in the selection despite being eligible.

Residents of the Bilongue neighborhood in Douala, Wouri division of the Littoral region have complained of dangers posed by several fallen electricity poles in the area. They say despite the several complaints nothing has been done by the powers that be clear the poles which carry live cables.

Cameroonian researcher, Alain Tchana, has been selected as one of the winners of the Francophonie Prize for Young Researchers. He is the Director of the Department of Computer Science at the Higher Teachers Training College in Lyon, France.
