Tonga: Several persons die in clash

Several individuals have lost their lives in a deadly clash in Tonga, in the Ndé Division of the West Region.

Contrary to media reports, however, the clash which caused these deaths is not an inter-tribal conflict as has been speculated.

The situation had brewed from September 5, 2021, when an inhabitant of the city was stabbed and killed by an unknown assailant, and took his phone.

A thorough raid by the population led to the arrest of one of the suspected assailant.

He was handed over to the police, who then detained him.

However, the arrested man was ejected out of police detention the very next day and burnt to death by an angry mob, who are still on rampage to fish out other criminals.

Calm, however, has returned to the locality, following talks of appeasement by the local authorities in Tonga.
