Traders still counting losses as fire guts 23 shops in KoussériFire guts 23 shops in Kousséri

Over 23 shops at the Kouseri Central Market, Logone-and-Chari Division of Cameroon’s Far North Region were completely burnt to ashes by a fire that broke out on Tuesday morning from an unknown source.

The Guardian Post Newspaper reports that the fire started when some shop owners in the market were making their final prayers in preparation for closing their day at the market.

The Firefighting Brigade was alerted to the scene of the incident, but the intensity of the flames made it almost impossible for any property to be rescued from these shops that were completely charred to the ground.

However, the flames were subdued after a reinforcement from the firefighting unit of N’Djamena, Chad came in.

Authorities have since paid a visit to the site of the incident and comforted the victims of the fire outbreak, as well as promising some Government assistance for the consumed shops.

The property damaged by the flames during the outbreak is estimated to cost not less than 2 Billion FCFA. An investigation, meanwhile, had been opened to determine the cause of the fire and to seek ways of averting future fires, a phenomenon which has become too recurrent in the Kouseri Central Market in recent times.
