Tragic Accident Claims Life of North West Legion Commander

A devastating accident involving a heavy-duty truck whose brakes failed has claimed the life of a top gendarme official, Colonel Zambo Nguema Etienne Célestin, the Legion Commander of the North West region. Colonel Zambo had held the position since March 2024.

The incident occurred earlier today on New Road, Nkwen, near the Hill Park Hotel, a well-known landmark in the area. According to eyewitnesses, the truck, unable to control its speed due to brake failure, rammed into vehicles and pedestrians, resulting in multiple casualties.

“It was terrifying. The truck was coming down fast and suddenly lost control. We heard screeching brakes, but it was too late. The commander’s vehicle was hit directly,” said one eyewitness who preferred to remain anonymous.

With Cameroon’s limited formal emergency services, especially outside major cities, it was other road users and passersby who rushed to assist those injured at the scene. Unfortunately, due to a lack of first aid training, some well-meaning efforts may have unintentionally worsened the conditions of some victims.

“There was chaos everywhere — people running and trying to help, but many didn’t know what to do,” another witness recalled. “The scene was heartbreaking.”

Authorities have confirmed the death of Colonel Zambo, whose leadership and dedication as legion commander, to security in the North West region earned him respect among colleagues and the community.

An officer told MMI that authorities will launch an investigation into the mechanical failure of the truck. He said they will also be reviewing safety measures along the busy New Road stretch.

“We express our deepest condolences to the family and all members of the security forces. This is a great loss for the community,” stated a senior official to MMI.

Further updates will be provided once official confirmations and additional details become available.
