Residents of quarter 10, a neighbourhood in Mbanga, Moungo Division of the Littoral region, were plunged into shock and grief following the discovery of a missing 8-year-old in a local river.
According to reports, an intensive search for the young boy was initiated on Saturday, January 13, 2024, just hours before the grim discovery.
Locals discovered the 8-year-old’s lifeless body close to the Moulong River, putting an end to any lingering hopes of a successful rescue.
Relatives are grappling with the uncertainty surrounding the child’s demise, unsure if it resulted from a premeditated murder or a tragic accident at the river’s edge.
The news of the young boy’s tragic fate has left many inconsolable, drawing sympathy from social media users as well.
“Much courage to the family who held on to hope until this moment, when it’s clear everything is over. Little angel, rest in peace,” expressed Vanessa, a social media user.
Alonzo highlighted the alarming frequency of such upsetting incidents in Cameroon by saying, “Cameroon is officially an open-air deathhouse. What good news has there been this past week? every day!” he noted.
The family has since recovered the body of the 8-year-old and laid him to rest.
This heartbreaking incident follows closely on the heels of another tragedy. Chia Bih Linda, a 43-year-old widow and mother of three, lost her life in Tiko, South West, when a boat carrying women of the Cameroon Baptist Convention capsized, just hours before the discovery of the young boy’s body.
