Transitional president sworn in after Mali coup

Colonel Bah N’Daw has been sworn in as Mali’s transitional president.

The former minister of defense was appointed days ago by the military that ousted former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

His appointment came after foreign powers insisted that the leadership of the west African state be handed over to a civilian.

He will be assisted by Col. Assimi Goïta, leader of the coup that ousted president Keïta.

Reports say they were both appointed by a group of 17 electors chosen by the coup leaders and will be sworn in on Friday.

Many are eager to see what changes the country’s new leader would bring.

Sanctions on Mali such as the US suspension of military aid, are yet to be lifted.
