The Cameroon Transport Union General Confederation has called off the nationwide strike recently announced to take place on October 19, 2023, after a meeting with the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul.

They made the announcement in a communiqué made public on Sunday, October 15, 2023.

On October 5, 2023, in a letter addressing the Prime Minister Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, the unions announced the strike action.

According to the Confederation, their move was a result of the government’s decision to give a deaf ear to their proposals, submitted in line with the curbing of the rate of road accidents in the country.

“We realize that the proposals to be addressed to you (see declaration in appendix) have not been taken into account to date, even though it would have avoided the mood swings mentioned above,” the letter read.

In the communiqué made public yesterday, the Confederation announced that the government had finally heeded their cry and that the strike action would no longer hold.

“The Minister of Territorial Administration, concerned by the consequences of this strike on the social climate and the maintenance of order, kindly invited the union leaders, authors of the strike notice, to a series of consultations in his services with a view to listening to them and reporting to the Head of State,” the communique read.

According to the unions, a meeting was organized with the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, where it was resolved that six out of the 17 suggestions would be prioritized.

“As for the eleven (11) other points of our demands, they will be examined progressively by the administrations concerned,” added the communique.

It went on, “Therefore, we, union leaders, have decided to lift, today, Sunday, October 15, 2023, the general strike call.”

The decision, they say, follows the commitment of the Minister of Territorial Administration to present all of their concerns to the President of the Republic, Paul Biya.
