Two Police Officers in Critical Condition After Gunfire Exchange in Bamenda

Two police officers sustained critical injuries during a gunfire exchange in Bamenda late Friday, December 13.

The confrontation occurred at Council Junction in Mankon, Bamenda II subdivision, where security forces clashed with armed Ambazonia separatist fighters.

According to reports, the separatist fighters had surfaced to intimidate the local population and enforce a “ghost town” the following day, Saturday, December 14. The separatists declared the shutdown to mourn one of their members killed weeks earlier by security forces.

The Ambazonia Defense Forces (ADF), a separatist militia active in Bamenda, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Eyewitnesses described the gunfire as intense, creating widespread panic among residents. Stray bullets reportedly pierced through nearby buildings, images seen by MMI confirm. No civilian casualties have been reported.

Two police officers suffered wounds and are in critical condition, while the number of casualties on the separatist side remains unknown. MMI obtained amateur footage showing the officers receiving treatment for bullet wounds at a health facility in Bamenda.

Authorities have not released an official statement on the incident, but the ADF claims that five security forces died in the attack—a claim that MMI has not independently verified. Initial images however, do not support this assertion.
