U.S Congress letter to Joe Biden: Cameroon MPs fire Back at “Falsehood”

Some Cameroonian Parliamentarians have written a correspondence addressed to the American Congress in response to a similar correspondence which some American senators addressed to U.S President, Joe Biden.

The letter to the President by the American senators sought to make the president of the US grant Cameroonian Immigrants in the U.S a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or a Deferred Enforcement Departure.

In the Correspondence to the President, the senators quoted some extreme conditions in Cameroon such as gross human rights violation, Boko Haram Insurgencies in the Far North Region, and the Sequestration of Anglophones in the Northwest and Southwest regions.

In reaction to what was addressed to the US president on the state of affairs in Cameroon, some 62 Cameroonian MPs have hit back at what they termed falsehoods relayed in the letter.

In the letter addressed to the US Congress, the Cameroonian MPs wrote. “…We seek not to interfere in the decision-making process of the Immigration Enforcement System of the US government in dealing with its challenges but we reject the views perpetuated by these Congressmen on the Prevailing situation in Cameroon. We consider these remarks on Cameroon as most unfriendly, derogatory and smacks of an attempt to tarnish our image, respectability in seeking to mislead public opinion, create confusion to justify the securing of a TPS and DED from some groups defending the rights of immigrants in the U.S.”

The Cameroonian MPs in their letter were categorical that Cameroon like any other normal functioning country issued the rights to travel to all its citizens, and in the case of its citizens illegally entering into other nations, then it is ready to co-operate with that nation to enhance the physical repatriation of these citizens.

In this light, the MP’s have expressed total dismay at the Congress’s description of Cameroon as the most horrible place in an unrealistic and untrue language just to obtain from the US executive branch a stay of execution of a DHS decision to remove some Cameroonians from the USA.


The MPs also shun the US Congress’s inability to point out the significant strides by the Cameroon Government in addressing many other social and humanitarians issues in the country such as Providing a safe haven for Nigerian refugees from Northern Nigeria, Providing accommodation to thousands of fleeing refugees from the Central African Republic, Cameroon’s cooperation with many countries including the US to fight Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, Cameroon’s endless fight to end Covid19, etc.

To this, the MPs concluded that Cameroon described by the U.S Congress does not exist and is a “figment of misinformed views of certain individuals who aim to cause the destabilization of the whole Central African Region”.

They also urged the US to be more diligent in ensuring respect for its international allies.
