U.S Congressmen Plead With President Joe Biden To Issue 18 Months Protection Status to Cameroonian Migrants In The U.S.

At least 49 U.S. Congressmen and Women have addressed a letter to the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden demanding added security status on Cameroonians in the U.S.

The Congressmen have proposed that the president should designate an 18-month Temporary Protected Status, TPS, or a Deferred Enforcement Departure, DED for Cameroonians.

This request by the United States Congressmen owes to the Socio-Political crisis in Cameroon that according to the letter has led to “War crimes, massive internal displacements, and shortages of essentials like water, food, healthcare, and housing.”

These factors as listed in the letter to the President by them adds that “it makes safe return impossible, and we must act quickly to extend protection against deportation to Cameroonian nationals in the United States.”

In the letter also, the Congressmen equally cited the government’s crackdown on peaceful political opposition as another reason for implementing TPS or DED.

They told President Biden “Deportees from the U.S are at a particular risk of being targeted for actual or imputed opposition to the Government and have experienced arbitrary detention and other abuses upon return.”

It added that “the Cameroonian Government and security forces creates risk for all deportees nationwide, including crackdowns on political dissent…” The letter referenced the deportation made by the U.S in September, October, and November of 2020.

The letter says according to press reports, Cameroonian authorities confiscated the identification documents of most Cameroonians deported in the October and November flights.

The letter, which has been signed by 49 Parliamentarians and senators includes among others high profile names in the American Democracy like, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Sara Jacobs, Grace Meng, Madeleine Dean, and Karen Bass.
