The University of Buea’s newly-appointed officials were installed Thursday, July 25, 2024, with the Vice Chancellor urging them to uphold the university’s legacy of excellence.

The installation event, attended by the entire university community, regional authorities, traditional rulers, friends, and relatives of the appointees, marked a significant moment in the institution’s ongoing commitment to quality education and excellence.

In his address to the three new directors, Vice-Chancellor Prof Ngomo Horace Manga highlighted their roles and provided specific directives tailored to their mandates.

He prescribed three cardinal obligations: “respect for hierarchy; loyalty to the institution; and discretion in the execution of their duties.”

He stressed that the quality of leadership within the university should reflect the values and standards of those who produce such leaders, urging everyone to foster an atmosphere of conviviality.

“The quality of leaders we get should reflect the leaders who produce them… let us all create an atmosphere of conviviality for all and sundry,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

The ceremony was particularly significant for Prof Lucy Ayamba Ndip, the pioneer director of the newly created Higher Teachers Training College (HTTC) of Buea.

Created by a Presidential decree signed by President Paul Biya on May 24, 2024, the HTTC represents a new chapter in the university’s history.

In her speech, Professor Ayamba expressed her gratitude to President Paul Biya, Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, and the Minister of Higher Education for the opportunity to serve.

She acknowledged the challenges of establishing a new school and emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation.

“Starting a new school is not easy, having a good foundation is not cheap. We can’t make any promises, but we will do our best,” she said.

Professor Ayamba also highlighted the need for teamwork and discipline, stating, “A team will be formed to start the new Higher Teachers Training College at the University of Buea, and we are going to work together as a team as we live up to the expectations and do what is expected of us. I want to think the population is expecting much, and the fact that I was called up into this function is an indication that we need to work very hard. We have to be disciplined; we have to instill values in the teachers that they will pass on to the youths.”
