Ugandan chef ‘breaks’ The Guinness World Record for the Longest Cooking Marathon

On Thursday, December 28th, 2023, Ugandan chef Mama D surpassed the existing Guinness World Record for the longest continuous cooking marathon. As of the writing of this article, Mama D has been cooking for an impressive 119 hours and 57 minutes, eclipsing the previous record of 116 hours and 7 minutes set by Irish chef Alan Fisher in November 2023.

This feat marks the third time that the record for the longest cooking marathon has been broken this year. In May, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci claimed the title with a time of 93 hours and 11 minutes, prompting a surge of interest in record-breaking culinary endurance among chefs across Africa.

Mama D’s journey isn’t over yet. She intends to continue cooking until the new year, aiming for a staggering 9-day marathon. If successful, this will further solidify her place in record-breaking history and inspire others to push their culinary boundaries.

The impact of Baci’s record-breaking achievement in May is evident. Her success propelled her to national fame, garnering support from celebrities, influencers, and even Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Additionally, Baci secured lucrative endorsements with brands like Gino and Woodsscope, a Nigerian kitchen appliance manufacturer. Her journey serves as a testament to the potential of record-breaking attempts to generate opportunities and recognition.

It’s important to note that while Mama D has surpassed the existing record, official recognition by Guinness World Records is still pending. The organization, established in 1955, meticulously verifies and certifies all record claims.

Regardless of the official stamp, Mama D’s dedication and endurance are undeniable. Her ongoing marathon exemplifies the spirit of resilience and determination that has become increasingly inspiring within the African culinary community. With each record broken, new possibilities emerge for chefs across the continent to showcase their talent and claim their place on the global stage.

The world awaits to see if Mama D will reach her ambitious goal and be formally crowned the new Guinness World Record holder. One thing is certain: her journey demonstrates the unwavering passion and boundless creativity that define the future of African cuisine.
