Cameroonians in Cyprus identifying with the separatists cause in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon have carried out peaceful protests at the offices of the United Nations the European Union and the Cyprus foreign ministry, against the ongoing killings in the two regions.
They reportedly handed memos to the regional and world organizations calling for international intervention to solve the more than five years armed conflict, CyprusMail has reported.
Dozens of demonstrators reportedly gathered outside the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Engomi, Cyprus, Friday August 19, 2022, before proceeding to the European Union office and Cyprus foreign ministry.
The demonstrators, MMI learnt, were holding placards with photos of bodies with the description suggesting they belonged to civilians killed by the military during the ongoing crisis in the north-west and south-west regions of Cameroon.
In each stop, the group submitted a petition as an appeal to the international community and humanitarian organisations to understand their plight and help put an end to the deadly conflict.
“So many southern Cameroonians fled the country and are flooding to other countries including Cyprus. This is a crisis and that has been going on since 2016,” said the protest leader Mokundu Elvis Bokanda
Footages of the protest flooded pro separatist social media platforms.
Sako Samuel, leader of one of the factional ‘Interim Governments’ was later seen in a zoom meeting addressing the protestors.
Commenting on the peaceful demonstration, UNHCR public information officer Emilia Strovolidou said “we received their petition, and we will forward it to our European bureau.”
