United Edge Past Everton With First-Half Penalty Duo

Manchester United continued their resurgence under Erik ten Hag with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Andre Onana keeping a clean sheet. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford capitalised on first-half penalties to secure all three points for the Red Devils, while Everton’s winless run in the Premier League extended to a staggering eleven games.

Despite boasting a superior expected goals (xG) of 1.48, Sean Dyche’s men were left frustrated by their profligacy in front of goal and some clumsy challenges in the box. Alejandro Garnacho, United’s young winger, drew both penalties after being brought down by James Tarkowski and then Ben Godfrey. Fernandes coolly slotted home the first from the spot, while Rashford drilled his effort into the opposite corner. This win makes United just the third team in Premier League history to have two different players score penalties in the first half of a game.

Everton, desperate for a win to arrest their slump, threw everything at United in the second half but lacked the cutting edge. Tom Davies had their best chance but blazed his shot wide. The Toffees now face a trip to Bournemouth in three weeks, hoping to finally break their winless streak.

For Manchester United, the victory extends their good form, winning five of their last seven league games. They now turn their attention to the FA Cup quarter-final against arch-rivals Liverpool.
