US Ambassador goes shopping at local food market in Yaounde

The US Ambassador to Cameroon, HE Christopher J. Lamora, surprised many with his recent visit to a local market in Yaoundé, where he was spotted purchasing various Cameroonian food items.

In photos shared on the Embassy’s social media handles, Ambassador Lamora was seen buying palm oil, hot peppers, and okra, among other local produce, as he interacted with women traders at the Mvog Betsi market in the capital city.

“On one of his favorite walks around Yaoundé on Sunday morning, Ambassador Lamora stopped at the Mvog Betsi market to pick up a few things and enjoyed engaging with some of the produce sellers,” the US Embassy said in a post.

“He went home with fresh safou, okra, hot peppers, and a bottle of red palm oil,” it added.

The Ambassador’s choice of ingredients has sparked curiosity about which Cameroonian dish he might be planning to prepare.

US ambassadors to Cameroon have historically enjoyed a variety of local dishes, including Ndole, Ekwang, Achu, Water Fufu, Eru, and Khati Khati.

Christopher J. Lamora was appointed US Ambassador to Cameroon in 2022. Recently, the US President, Joe Biden, confirmed Elizabeth Moore Aubin as the new US Ambassador to Cameroon, though she has yet to officially assume the role.
