US Government snubs appeals, deports first set of Cameroonian asylum seekers

Dozens of Cameroonians being deported from the US will be home anytime soon.

They are the first set of immigrants repatriated despite several calls for the US Department of State to reconsider its decision.

In an outing yesterday, members of US congress, Senators Ilhan Omar, Cedric L. Richmond and Joaquin Castro expressed their concerns over the deportations. Among a host of issues raised, they stated that the lives of the immigrants could be at stake if they were taken back.

A similar view had earlier been buttressed by Amnesty International that noted that the Cameroon government is likely to torture them.

Many in Cameroon and beyond were taken by surprise when the US announced that a group of 81 Cameroonians who had illegally gotten access into America were going to be deported today Wednesday 14, October, 2020.

The decision by the U.S government brought a backlash amongst Cameroonian social media users who criticised the American government for sending back Cameroonians who may have probably entered America seeking for asylum because of the socio-political crisis in the Northwest and the Southwest regions of Cameroon.

The US government however has noted that the group of 81 Cameroonian deportees expected back in the country today form part of millions of immigrants who illegally enter into the US soil through the America-Mexico border. They also revealed that contrary to claims that all of the 81 deportees are Cameroonians from English speaking regions, they include Cameroonians from all ten regions of Cameroon and could all not possibly have moved into the US soil because of the crisis in the Northwest and the Southwest regions.
