Victims of Mankon ‘military raids’ plead for justice

Six months after the killings, burning and material destructions in three quarters in Mankon village in the North West, victims have been accusing the government for not rendering justice.

Affected persons have taken refuge in different towns. Satellite images of Human Rights Watch revealed, at least seventy houses were set ablaze on the 15th of may 2019.

The ruins of burnt buildings and other structures in Mankon still bear witness of the attack. No house has been reconstructed nor compensation given to victims of the incident.

On the 17th of May, given the gravity of the human and material destructions, the governor of the North West region created an instigation committee with a major assignment “…to evaluate humanitarian situation and material damages recorded in the course of the attack”.

Six months after, victims are disappointed that the commission headed by the senior divisional officer of Mezam has not rendered results of who or which group is responsible and possibly financial compensation for victims.

Residents of Alachu, Matsam and Muwatsu quarters in Mankon attacked on May 15th points accusing fingers on military men from Bafut military base for carrying out the act.

A witness in Alachu explains how the military beat up civilians savagely, burnt down houses, killed domestic animals and looted shops and other houses. In the course of what witnesses call “military raid”,41 year old Nwacha Christopher was killed.
Military men accused the population of Mankon for hosting restoration forces when they launch attacks against the military.
