Victoria United boycotts home game against Apejes

The Limbe-based football club, Victoria United, aka OPOPO, failed to entertain its visitors, Apejes FC of Mfou, today, as it left them stranded at the Limbe Centenary Stadium.

Both teams were going to lock horns at 3pm today on match day five of the MTN Elite One Championship, but Victoria United boycotted the game.

Multiple reports say only Apejes players showed up on the pitch for the encounter.

An hour to the game, representatives of both teams attended a technical meeting.

But Victoria United’s boycott surprises many fans, who are speculating that the decision could have been made after this meeting.

The club has not advanced any reason for the boycott.

Early this week, the Limbe-based club announced it was going to play Apejes and gave the impression that its players were ready for the game.

This raised hope among fans that another opportunity was rife for the club to overturn its series of defeats.

Victoria United, which gained admission into the MTN Elite One this year, has so far won just one out of four games, with three straight defeats.

Amid the failures, the club’s president Nkwain Valentine remained confident they were going to lift the Elite One trophy.

This morning, Mr Nkwain posted a video saying his goal was to enable young Cameroonians to express their talents.

“A lot of things have been going on and I want to tell our followers and our supporters that I personally, president of Victoria United, I did not get into football because I wanted to make gain or because I wanted to seek position from the government or the federation,” he said.
