What Biya Failed to Tell Cameroonians in National Day Address

In the wake of the coronavirus, many African leaders have assisted their citizens financially, economically and otherwise. Some have gone as far as exempting citizens from some obligations including rents and water bills.

Addressing Cameroonians todsy for the first time since the pandemic broke out in Cameroon, President Biya didn’t outline any “significant” measures.

He had earlier allocated items worth 2 billion FCFA for preventive kits, but it has been criticised as the items some villages got amounted to nothing.

President Biya also ignored Archbishop Samuel Kleda’s COVID-19 treatment reported to have treated over half a thousand people. Though a health team was sent to Kleda by government, President Biya stayed silent over the issue.

Biya also turned a blind eye to Maurice Kamto’s Survie Cameroon Survival Initiative, SCSI which has been facing threats from government over the past weeks. Though the movement was created to serve Cameroonians and assist them to combat the virus, the head of state remained mute about it.

While the President’s speech may have put to rest rumours of his death, critics say it also indicates neglect on his part due to the prolonged silence.
Cameroon now has over 2,000 positive coronavirus cases.
