The Wimbum Cultural and Development Association (WICUDA) has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing aggression by a Mbororo militia against the people of Sop, one of the thirty-three villages of the Wimbum tribe. This response follows two deadly attacks on the village within a span of less than two weeks.

The attacks have resulted in at least one death, with homes burned, stores looted, and several locals sustaining injuries. The most recent attack occurred early Wednesday, August 7.

“The Wimbum people have now reached the conclusion that the Fulanis are intentional and determined on their unchallenged aggression against them,” stated Nforgwei Rogers, President of WICUDA, in a press release.

The statement urged that “these unending, lawless and unpunished aggressions against the Wimbum people ‘must’ now be taken more seriously by all: the administration, elected officials, forces of law and order, traditional rulers, community leaders, and elites of both communities.”

WICUDA had previously advocated for peace following an earlier attack, but the community was left in shock after the most recent violence.

“With the incident of last night, I have reached out to various people from among the categories listed herein above to enlarge and accelerate the plan,” the statement continued.

Despite the severity of the situation, WICUDA’s president made a heartfelt appeal for calm: “In as much as it is hard to bear, I appeal to our hurting people of Sop village in particular, and Wimbum people in general, to remain calm as we seek ways and means to reach a peaceful solution.”
