Widow arrested for burying new born baby in Melong




A widow whose name Mimi Mefo Info got as Marie Carine has been accused of burying her baby after putting to birth.

The incident reportedly occured in the village of Mouagel, situated in Melong in the Littoral Region.



According to reports, the woman in her 40s was arrested by the officers of the Melong Gendarmerie Brigade over the weekend.

Going by the accused, she had intended to end her life due to several difficulties.


After haven consumed an unknown substance hoping to terminate her life, she claimed it instead led to an induced labor.

Upon delivery of the baby prematurely, she decided bury for fear of being accused of killing the baby.


“I told myself, even though I am left with one and a half month to give birth, it’s better I take poison and die. So I took a product which did not take my life but rather that of the foetus,” she recounted after her arrest.

Investigations by security and health officials in Melong however, contradicted the woman’s version.


According to the security officials the accused had voluntarily put to birth, after which she decided to bury it.

Raphaël Manga, commander at the Melong Gendarmerie staed that during preliminary interrogation, she had revealed that “it was just some clots of blood”.


Following a serie of tests and examinations carried out on the said premature baby, Christian Leussi, a health practitioner revealed that the baby boy was due for birth, since he weighed about 3.5kg.

At press time, the accused had been taken to the state prosecutor for Nkongsamba, where charges will be brought against her.
