Will Visit of Macron end bloodshed in NW, SW regions?

By David Atangana

French president, Emmanuel Macron, will begin an official visit to Cameroon this Monday July 25,2022.

The visit according to an official program from the civil cabinet of the presidency of Cameroon, will end July 27th.

It will be the first time Emmanuel Macron is visiting Cameroon since he became President of France.

The last time a French leader visited Cameroon was in 2015.

It is not known if the Anglophone crisis will be on the agenda when Macron and Paul Biya meet tomorrow.

However, several media reports have been suggesting that the crisis will be one of the major issues that has brought the French head of state to Yaounde.

The current separatist armed conflict in the Anglophone regions has claimed the lives of atleast 4,000 people, according to human rights reports.

It is believed by many that, the coming of Elysee to Yaounde may change the narrative of the conflict.

France as a former colonial power is seen as still having some influence on her former colonies-Cameroon inclusive.

The position of France on the conflict, however, has hitherto appeared to sound like that of the government of Cameroon.

Many believe that the French government is supportive of President Biya’s military option in solving the armed conflict-a strategy that has failed to lay the situation to rest.

During a visit to Nigeria in 2018,Mr Macron confronted by the media on the Anglophone Crisis simply said France was against secession adding that decentralization was the way out.

In 2019 ,Jean Yves Le Drian, then French foreign minister told the French parliament that,“In the English-speaking regions of Cameroon, the situation continues to deteriorate. The human losses are more and more heavy.France, the European Union and the United Nations are doing everything to push Paul Biya to take concrete steps in redressing the crisis.”

A visit to Cameroon same year by Le Drian created hopes among Cameroonians but these hopes were fashed as the crisis kept deepening.

The statements from France are considered as not concrete enough given that blood continues to flow unabated

Calls from rights groups,Scholars, writers and many others emphasized that France has a big role to play in resolving the crisis.

It is an open secret that the release of opposition leader Maurice Kamto and associates from jail; and the arrest of soldiers charged with Ngarbuh Massacre were as a result of Pressure from France.

Thesame pressure commentators say, could be applied to stop the onslaught in the Anglophone regions.
