Women of Buea Unite for International Women’s Day: “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress”

The morning at Bongo Square in Buea was a lively scene, with a diverse array of colours and determined women coming together to celebrate International Women’s Day. Each year on March 8th, the worldwide celebration recognises the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women. Today in Buea, the event was more than just a celebration; it served as a call to action.

The theme of this year, “Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress,” deeply touched the audience. Buea, similar to numerous cities in Cameroon, is confronted with urgent issues. Household budgets are feeling the strain of the increasing cost of living, as insecurity looms due to the ongoing Anglophone crisis. Moreover, a concerning rise in gender-based violence further complicates the challenges faced by women in Buea.

Despite the challenges faced, the prevailing atmosphere of the day exuded resilience and optimism. Speakers spoke to the audience, emphasising the vital contribution of women in strengthening Buea. From entrepreneurs playing a vital role in the local economy to educators moulding the future generation, the valuable contributions of women were recognised and honoured.

The theme, “Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress,” was a powerful reminder. Empowering women in Buea through investments in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities can significantly accelerate progress and create changemakers. Despite facing significant challenges, the determined spirit of Buea’s women sends a clear message: they are prepared to take the lead.
