Women’s World Cup: FIFA offers Africa one more place

A move initiated by the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino to expand the scope and size of FIFA competitions across the globe has equally seen the African continent gain a significant other place in the upcoming Women’s FIFA World Cup 2023.

Initially a 24-team tournament, FIFA has decided to expand the Largest Women Footballing competition to 32, which was initially the number of competitors for the men’s FIFA World Cup Category before it was increased to 48.

Initially, only three African countries participated per tournament. There is therefore optimism with FIFA’s latest decision, which is expected to increase Africa’s chances of going further in the football competition.

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have had two participations so far in the competition and have both times managed to cross to the next phase of the competition.

Just like the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the FIFA World Cup has equally had a significant increase in the number of teams from 32 to 48 teams, with Africa gaining 1 more place to have 5 participants from 4 previously.

Infantino’s quest to expand Footballing competitions across the globe has equally seen him successfully lobby an increment in the number of teams competing for the African Cup of Nations from 16 to 24.

He has equally successful expanded the FIFA Club World Cup with more teams participating in the tournament rather than just intercontinental club champions.
