Yaounde: 15-year-old IDP girl dies after allegedly being raped, impregnated by senior government official

A 15-year-old internally displaced girl whose name we got as Burinyuy Shantal is reported to have died after being raped and impregnated by an official at the Ministry of Public Contract. The incident reportedly occured in Yaounde.

According to sources, the young girl met her predator some months back when the latter lured her to bed with the use of money.

“She was still a minor, so we cannot say they were involved in a romantic relationship,” said the lawyer of the young girl’s family.

The lawyer added that, “the man attracted her with money. According to what she told us before dying, the man forced her.”

It is reported that the man said to be aged above 60 took advantage of the vulnerable girl a good number of times before she got pregnant.

The victim was residing in Yaounde with her uncle after she had left Bamenda to seek refuge due to the ongoing crisis wrecking the North West Region.

“After realizing the young girl was pregnant, he gave her some concoction which she took for about a week before she started bleeding,” added the lawyer.

After being rushed to the hospital, reports from medical officials revealed that the concoctions have “damaged some internal organs in the young girl’s system which resulted in her death.”

Family members, lawyers including some Human Rights Organizations who spoke to Equinoxe TV, a renowned TV station in Cameroon are calling for justice.

Relatives have also filed a complaint at judiciary police for investigations to be conducted and the perpetrator brought to book.
