30 patients have been discharged from the Yaoundé Gyneco-Obstetrics Hospital by the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie.
He did this during a routine tour of health establishments situated in the capital city of Yaounde.
The patients were being held at the hospital by the staff because they could not afford money to pay for their medical bills.
Minister Malachie also revealed that the gesture was done on behalf of the Presidential couple, which according to him, was to enable the needy to enjoy some comfort as they enter the new year 2022.
The phenomenon of patients being held at hospitals for unpaid bills is nothing recent in Cameroon. The Guardian Post Newspaper reports of another case in a viral video where a lady and her children were held captive at a hospital for unpaid bills.
The lady in question is reported to have given birth to a set of triplets, with one of the children dying at birth. The hospital demanded 400,000FCFA as hospital bills, sparking varied reactions from Cameroonians on social media.
