Yaoundé: IDP gets robbed of her life savings; police suspiciously release thugs after arrest

An Anglophone IDP lady in Yaoundé by the name Mbong Lidwin Ngong, otherwise known as Monalisa is in distress after her container was robbed in Obilli in Yaoundé by some identified individuals.

Monalisa is a native of Muyuka in the Southwest region and she went to Yaoundé because of the crisis in the Anglophone regions. Monalisa revealed to MMI that she arrived in Yaoundé and learned how to smoke fish, which she apparently saved some money from and opened a business of her own.

“This month I took what I had saved and decided to start an oil retail business in Obilli. With the money which I had saved for close to two years, I opened a container and bought 700 liters of Red and Groundnut Oil to retail. On Tuesday when I went to my container to begin selling for the very first time, I discovered that my container had been robbed that night and all my merchandise had been taken away…” she narrated.

Petrified, Monalisa began wailing on the streets of what had happened to her, till a commercial bike rider came to her to offer her some vital information.

“One bike rider saw me and decided to help me by identifying the thieves who had broken into my container and stolen my merchandise. We went and reported these boys to the police station at Ngoa-Ekele and two days later I was called and informed that the thieves had been arrested. I was so delighted. I went there again and they told me to wait for a little till they apprehend all of them,” she said.

“Three days later, I returned to the police station because I had not heard from them and to my greatest shock, those boys had been released. I was not even informed when they were released and they gave me no valid reason why the boys were released either,” Monalisa lamented.

The victim is of the opinion that the police might have been compromised to release the boys. She equally demands justice for her situation as she feels the reason why her case has been neglected by the police is due to the fact that she is an Anglophone IDP.
