Yaoundé: Police arrest naked protesters seeking end to Maurice Kamto’s ‘illegal’ house arrest

Police in Yaounde have arrested some naked protesters seeking an end to the house arrest of Maurice Kamto, President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, CRM.

Those arrested Saturday, November 21, 2020, are detained at the Nkoldongo Police Station.

A source told Mimi Mefo Info on the phone to Yaounde that “the over fifty women arrested were among hundreds of women protesting in Yaoundé today. They are calling on the government to remove military men stationed at the residence Prof. Maurice Kamto and the release of all militants of CRM party arrested on the 22nd of September 2020.”

The president of the women’s wing of the party, Awasum Mispa, led the women, most of whom are militants of the CRM.

To one of the protesting women, “…we have decided to protest half-naked to show the gravity of prolonged human rights violation perpetrated by the regime of Paul Biya.”

They are asking for the release of Olivier Bibou Nissack and Prof. Alain Fogue Tedom spokesperson of Prof. Maurice Kamto and national treasurer of the party respectively as well as hundreds of other militants detained in prisons across the country.

The protesting women are reported to have met with police brutality around Santa Barbara in Yaoundé.

Militants of the CRM party hold firmly that their leader, Professor Maurice Kamto won the October 2018 presidential election in Cameroon. This explains why they address him as president-elect.

On the 22nd of September, the party called for a nationwide protest to urge President Paul Biya to resign. This led to the arrest of many of its members.

Prior to that, the government positioned troops at the residence of Maurice Kamto preventing him from stepping out.
