Youths in Mutengene Tackle Unemployment and Climate Change Through Plastic Recycling

A group of young individuals in Mutengene have taken a proactive stance against unemployment and environmental degradation by transforming discarded plastic bottles into construction materials. While operating under the name “Glorious Stars” and led by Ebot Simon, the initiative sees the youths collecting plastic waste and processing it into bricks and pavement blocks for building and road construction.

Addressing Dual Challenges

The Glorious Stars initiative directly addresses two significant challenges facing the community: the lack of employment opportunities for young people and the growing problem of plastic pollution. By collecting and repurposing plastic waste, the group is not only creating a source of income but also actively contributing to a cleaner environment.

Innovative Recycling Process

The youths have developed a process to transform the collected plastic bottles into durable construction materials. While the specific techniques employed were not detailed, the resulting bricks and pavement blocks are reportedly suitable for various construction purposes.

Leader’s Perspective

Ebot Simon, the leader of Glorious Stars, emphasised the group’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions. “We decided that instead of waiting for jobs that are not there, we would create our own,” Simon said. “At the same time, we saw the huge problem of plastic littering our community, and we realised we could do something about it.”

Community Impact

The efforts of the Glorious Stars are, however, already beginning to have a noticeable impact in Mutengene. The initiative provides employment for its members and offers a potential solution for managing plastic waste and creating affordable building materials. This project will have huge long-term effects on both the local economy and the environment if it receives adequate support.
