An attack attributed to Boko Haram militants targeted the military camp in Zigué late on the night of April 26, resulting in the deaths of two Cameroonian soldiers and the theft of military equipment.

According to military sources, the assault occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. Armed attackers overran the camp, reportedly taking advantage of low visibility and minimal resistance. The deceased soldiers have been identified as Sergeant Makombé and Second-Class Private Mbouombouo.

“The attack was sudden and coordinated,” said a local officer involved in the post-incident response. “They took weapons, ammunition, and a vehicle before retreating toward the Nigerian border.”

Series of Recent Attacks

The incident follows a series of similar operations in the region. Earlier this week, a military camp in Gassama near Maltam was also attacked, resulting in the destruction of infrastructure and a rapid withdrawal by the attackers.

In Wulgo, an ambush on a patrol on March 24-25 left at least twelve soldiers dead. These attacks further suggest a pattern in Boko Haram’s current tactics: striking isolated outposts, seizing supplies, and retreating into difficult-to-access terrain near the Lake Chad basin.

Operational Response Underway

Military sources confirm that operations to track and apprehend the attackers began early on April 27. These efforts include the deployment of elite units and increased aerial surveillance.

“We are pursuing the individuals responsible,” said a defence official. “Reinforcements and monitoring have been increased across the region.”

The dry season has affected regional security conditions. Lower water levels in the Lake Chad basin have made some areas more accessible to armed groups, facilitating cross-border movements and night-time raids.

Strategic Assessment Needed

Security analysts note that the frequency of these incidents indicates a need to re-evaluate current strategies.

“Coordination between regional forces and local intelligence gathering needs to improve,” said Dr. Aïcha Moussa, a researcher specialising in regional security. “Support to local communities is also essential for long-term stability.”

A ceremony to honour the fallen soldiers is expected in Maroua, with participation from military leadership and regional authorities. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the proceedings but has not provided a specific date.
