Some 26 people have been arrested at Bole Bakundu, a village in Meme Division, and detained in Kumba after a group of youths accused and brutally killed a 23-year-old man for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
They were arrested about 4am on Tuesday, April 4, by soldiers of the Rapid Intervention Battalion and bundled into detention at Up Station, Kumba.
MMI learned among those arrested were two Quarter Heads who watched how a group of about youths tortured and hanged Yanick Moiti to death.
“Among those arrested are two Quarter Heads who were watching and doing nothing when the young boy was being beaten to death,” said Ndifor Owamba, a native of Bole Bakundu who was close to Yanick Moiti before he was killed.
Recounting how the suspects were arrested, he said: “The military went to Bole at 3 o’clock. They slept there and at four they started their operation. Since the military was commanded by someone from Bole, they knew all of them.”
Ndifor earlier told MMI Yanick Moiti was a hardworking man, an orphan who was helping to send him food in Yaounde where he schools.
Although Moiti was killed when Ndifor was in Yaounde, he had vowed to seek justice for him by getting the police arrest his killers.
He told MMI he had been planning to travel to Kumba to ensure justice is done. But he succeeded in contacting the military without necessarily traveling.
