Some residents of the Camp Yabassi neighborhood in Douala, Littoral Region of Cameroon have been hospitalized after partaking in a protest against the demolition of their house.
The demolitions, which left a good number of families stranded and homeless were carried out on the morning of Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
According to reports, heavily armed government forces fired teargas to disperse the enraged inhabitants in the course of the protest. However, some persons sustained injuries in the process, while others lost consciousness after inhaling the gas.
According to an eyewitness, “several people have been hospitalized due to the gas they inhaled.”
He equally indicated that some people were arrested during the protest and their whereabouts are not yet known.
“I was born here and I inherited the house from my parents. I have all my documents that prove that the land belongs to me. We were not even informed of the demolitions,” disclosed a visually impaired man who happened to be a victim of the demolition.
The population expressed their dissatisfaction as they claim they were not informed of the demolitions, so they could park out their things before time.
