Sporadic gunfire has reportedly erupted in the Nkwen neighbourhood of Bamenda, North West Region, injuring at least one woman. Mimi Mefo Info (MMI) received a video from a source at the scene showing a woman with a gunshot wound to her leg as residents attempted to rush her to hospital.

A voice in the footage questions, “What do these boys want?” A reference targets suspected separatist fighters, known locally as “Amba Boys.” A different voice in the video states that a second victim was “lucky,” suggesting that multiple civilians might have been targeted.

Community members are seen trying to carry the wounded woman to safety. One warns the others to avoid a specific route, saying armed men were visible in that direction.

Eyewitness Account Brings Clarification

MMI contacted a resident who lives around St. Louis School and some metres away from St Paul’s Junction, a location close to where the incident reportedly took place. The individual said he did not hear any gunfire but acknowledged that Mile Three is geographically large and densely populated, suggesting events could have occurred without his direct knowledge.

“I live within the premises of the military hospital at Mile Three. I didn’t hear any gunshots, but Mile Three is vast,” he told MMI.

Background and Context

This incident comes amid ongoing conflict in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, where armed separatist groups have clashed with government forces since 2016. The North West and South West regions frequently experience security disturbances, often impacting civilian populations.

While the exact cause of the gunfire in Nkwen remains unconfirmed, the language and tone in the video point to possible separatist activity. No official statement has yet been released by security forces or local authorities regarding the incident.

MMI has reviewed the video and gathered firsthand testimony but has not independently confirmed all details. The identities of those involved are being withheld for their safety.
