A 57-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of Minnesota Democratic state legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. The suspect, identified as Vance Luther Boelter, was apprehended late Sunday in rural Sibley County. This is around 80 kilometres west of Minneapolis, after a two-day manhunt described by authorities as the largest in the state’s history.
Boelter is also accused of wounding Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, during an earlier shooting the same day. The couple survived despite sustaining a total of 17 gunshot wounds. Police say Boelter surrendered peacefully when confronted by law enforcement, though he was armed at the time.

Governor: Killings Were “Politically Motivated”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated in a press conference that the deaths of the Hortmans constituted a “politically motivated assassination,” a claim echoed by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar. “This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences,” Walz said.
Authorities have not officially disclosed a motive, but investigators reportedly discovered a list of potential targets in a car linked to the suspect. According to local media reports, the list included prominent Minnesota politicians such as Governor Walz, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and Attorney General Keith Ellison.
“This was an unspeakable act that has altered the state of Minnesota,” said Walz.
Arrest and Charges
Boelter faces two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear in court in Minneapolis at 13:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Monday.
Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, confirmed that Boelter had impersonated a police officer during the attacks and exchanged gunfire with police before fleeing. “We are not looking for any additional suspects at this time,” Evans said.
Boelter’s wife was temporarily detained during a traffic stop but later released after cooperating with investigators.
Survivors Speak Out
Yvette Hoffman issued a public statement on Sunday describing the couple’s survival as a stroke of luck. “We feel incredibly lucky to be alive,” she wrote, adding that the family was “gutted and devastated” by the deaths of the Hortmans. “There is never a place for this kind of political hate,” she said.
Yvette and John Hoffman were reportedly shot at their home in Champlin at around 2:00 a.m. local time on Saturday. According to a social media post by a family member, Yvette shielded her daughter with her body during the attack.
Shortly after, the Hortmans were killed at their home in Brooklyn Park, approximately eight miles away. Melissa Hortman had served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for two decades and was Speaker of the House from 2019 to 2025.
Community in Shock
Local residents have expressed disbelief. Taha Abuisnaineh, a neighbour, told the BBC that he had known the Hortman family for over 20 years. “They were very nice neighbours in a very quiet neighbourhood,” he said. “You don’t see police activity here. We are very shocked.”
Another resident described receiving a Christmas card annually from the Hortmans. “What a big loss for Minnesota,” she said.
Background of the Suspect
According to publicly available information, Boelter has worked as a security contractor and religious missionary. He spent time in Africa and the Middle East. He previously served on a state workforce development board alongside Senator Hoffman, although it is unclear if the two men had a personal relationship.
Authorities have not described a manifesto, but Evans confirmed that a notebook containing names was found in the suspect’s vehicle. “I would not describe it as a treatise on ideology or a manifesto,” he said.
Officials have notified law enforcement agencies in neighbouring states to alert other individuals potentially listed in the document.

Ongoing Investigation
Minnesota state and federal authorities continue to investigate the case. Law enforcement officials say that while the suspect is in custody, they are continuing to examine potential political motivations and whether others may have been at risk.
The killings have sparked renewed discussion about political violence in the United States. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated, “Political violence is abhorrent,” praising law enforcement’s efforts in securing the arrest without further casualties.
