Gamboura, a town located in Cameroon’s Mayo-Tsanaga division near the Nigerian border, is currently seeing the construction of a new Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) camp. This project is part of the Cameroonian government’s broader strategy to improve security in areas facing cross-border threats.

Strengthening Security Presence in a High-Risk Zone

The new military base is being established to reinforce the presence of state forces in a zone that has long experienced security challenges. The 11th Light Intervention Unit of the 1st BIR is already operating in the area and will be based at the new facility once construction is completed. The unit is tasked with addressing ongoing threats such as kidnappings for ransom, cattle theft, nighttime assaults, and highway attacks.

According to military officials, the base is designed to serve as both a strategic defense point and a deterrent to criminal activities affecting the local population and the broader border region.

Humanitarian Support Launched Alongside Military Operations

While the military infrastructure is still under development, the BIR has already initiated humanitarian support for local communities. The unit recently carried out a distribution of essential supplies, including rice and flour, to residents in the area.

“This action is part of our mission to not only ensure security but also support the well-being of the population,” said the unit commander, who led the distribution efforts.

Authorities and Communities Working Together

The commander also highlighted the collaboration between the military and local stakeholders. He expressed appreciation for the support received from both administrative and traditional authorities, particularly in securing the land needed for the camp.

“We welcome the collaboration of the local population, which is essential for the success of this project,” he stated. “This base will be a strategic tool not only for defense but also for deterring criminal activity in the region.”

A Broader Effort to Restore Stability

The creation of the BIR camp in Gamboura is seen as a significant step in the government’s long-term commitment to restoring security and stability in border areas that have experienced neglect in the past. For local residents, the increased military presence brings hope for a return to safer conditions.

While the initial humanitarian assistance has been well received by the population, some observers note that lasting security will require ongoing engagement, infrastructure development, and responsive governance to meet both immediate and long-term needs.
