A fire incident caused panic this morning at the Maroua bus station in Cameroon’s Far North region, precisely in the town of Mokolo.
This is after an 18-seater bus belonging to the transport company Mokolo Express caught fire just minutes before its scheduled departure to Mokolo, the capital of the Mayo-Tsanaga division.
According to witnesses, the fire started at the rear of the vehicle as passengers were preparing to board. No injuries were reported, but the flames quickly damaged the engine and destroyed several administrative documents belonging to the vehicle.
Immediate responses came from passersby, transport workers, and travellers, who used sand, water, and fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the fire. Firefighters arrived shortly afterwards to fully extinguish the blaze and secure the area.
The driver, caught off guard, was unable to retrieve some personal belongings that remained inside the vehicle. At this time, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown. An investigation has been launched to determine the origin of the incident.
