Inhabitants of Bangolan in the North West region of Cameroon are still in fear following a military raid in the village. Tension started on Tuesday after the military invasion in Babessi, a source tells MMI. In addition to one civilian and one suspected separatist fighter shot dead, a total of seven houses have been razed to ashes. Locals say the soldiers were in the search of separatist fighter, General No Pity.
There is panic in Cameroon following the detection of a 5th Coronavirus case. That was announced by the Minister of public health, Dr Manaouda Malachie. He called for the intensification of preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
Some Cameroonians say Coronavirus preventive measures put in place by the regime are not enough and cannot sufficiently stop the spread of the virus. Some of them wish to see schools, churches and other public gatherings temporary suspended to safe the population. They criticize the fact that Cameroon’s incumbent speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Cavaye Djibril did not respect a 14 days period of quarantine upon his return from France at the weekend recently prescribed by the health Minister.
Commercial motorcycle riders in Ngaoundere, Adamawa region in Cameroon wrestled with security forces of the town today. They were fighting against perpetual extortion of money from them by security forces. Last evening, uniform men confiscated hundreds of commercial motorcycles for violating a time limit given to them to operate. At least one person was reported dead and five others wounded following the confrontation this afternoon.
A greater number of people in the North West of Cameroon say the ban of commercial motorcycle activities from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM in six out of the seven divisions is going to affect their activities. Apart from Donga Mantung division, commercial motorcycles riders in the six other divisions of the region have to respect the ban.
Hon. Cavaye Yeguié Djibril was the centre of attraction at the National Assembly today as parliamentarians officially received their parliamentary attributes. The MP from Mayo Sava division returned from France following poor health. Commentators say, Hon. Cavaye did not respect a 14 day quarantine period for anyone coming from a country suffering from Coronavirus.
The Confederation of African Football, (CAF) has released the dates and venues for the CAF confederations cup final and the CAF Champions League 2019/2020 finals. Though in May, there are concerns on how successful the war against COVID-19 would have been by then. The CAF Champions league final will be played in Douala on May 29.
The lifeless body of a motorbike rider has been retrieved from a gutter in Bonamousadi- Douala. He was found early Monday 16th March. “Residents in the area say they heard someone scream around 2:00 a.m. Monday morning,” a source told MMI. The rider’s corpse was found with wounds around the waist and scratches around the fingers.
A Health worker detained for “associating” with separatist fighters. Fonkwa Roland’s parents, a family member says, “were there (at the brigade) two days ago and they told them that if they want to see him they should go to Yaounde.” His wife, children, family members, patients and colleagues have not set their eyes on him… “They don’t even allow a family member to see him right now. We don’t even know what he’s eating,” MMI is told.
House Speaker, Cavayé Djibril has appeared at the National Assembly after returning to the country over the weekend. The election of a new bureau in parliament takes place tomorrow and it seems Cavayé who has been House Speaker for almost 30 years wants to maintain the position. In Parliament today, he was described as frail-looking.
The National Assembly is set to elect a permanent bureau tomorrow Tuesday. Earlier today, the newly elected lawmakers were handed their full attributes after days of verification of their documents. The House is short of 13 members following the cancellation of the election in parts of the North West and South West regions.
A bloody confrontation has ensued today between angry motorbike riders in Ngaoundere, chief town of Adamawa Region and security forces. The bikers are said to have been protesting against an administrative order banning circulation of commercial motorbikes from 6:00 PM daily. Reports says the bikers were retaliating the seizure of over fifty motorcycles. Some of the protesters have been injured after security forces used teargas on them.
The wife of late Dr. Adamou Ndam Njoya has extended her appreciation to those who assisted her in one way or the other during his funeral. Honourable Tomaino Ndam Njoya has also announced a ceremony in Yaounde on March 27 to commemorate the death. Adamou Ndam Njoya was founding President of the UDC party.
All football in Ghana has been put on hold because of the coronavirus outbreak. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) took action on Sunday evening following an announcement from President Nana Akufo-Addo, ordering a suspension of public gatherings, including sports events. “Following the directives given by the President of the Republic [the GFA] has suspended all its competitions with immediate effect until further notice,” a statement said.
Several African states have imposed far-reaching restrictions in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus. South Africa has declared a national disaster and announced a ban on travel from the worst-affected countries, while Kenya has also imposed sweeping travel restrictions. The measures are an attempt to prevent a major outbreak on a continent with poor health services. At least 27 African states have so far been affected by the virus. In total, nearly 350 people have been diagnosed with the virus across Africa. Seven people have died while 42 have recovered, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. Most of the cases involve people arriving from Europe and North America.
Algeria has stopped all flights and boats with Europe, Reuters news agency reports Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad as saying. It adds that the measure will come in on 19 March. The country has 48 coronavirus cases.
Zimbabwe’s defence minister has called coronavirus a “punishment” to the US and Europe for imposing sanctions on her country. “Coronavirus is the work of god punishing countries who imposed sanctions on us,” Oppah Muchinguri said at a rally in the northern town of Chinhoyi on Saturday. The US and EU imposed financial and travel restrictions against individuals and companies for what they say is a lack of progress in democratic and human rights reforms as well as restrictions on press freedoms.President Emmerson Mnangagwa is one of the people targeted by the US sanctions.
A Liberian government official returning from Switzerland has tested positive for coronavirus, becoming the country’s first confirmed case. Nathaniel Blama, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, tested positive on Monday morning. He returned from Switzerland on Friday.
At least 17 people have been confirmed dead and many others injured after an explosion at a gas processing plant on Sunday in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos. (Source Foreign News: BBC Africa)
