With two hundred and eighty four coronavirus cases (284) in Cameroon as of Thursday April 2nd 2020 with seemingly no concrete administrative measure on how to stop the spread of the pandemic, Kebi Valery says “coronavirus has not only come to expose the poor state of our health service system but also to unmask the fragility of the state of our economy”.
He opines that for democracy and good governance, the actions of the government of Cameroon in the face of the pandemic have either been late or contrary to proper policies that can stop the spread of coronavirus.
For instance Kebi Valery says the government of Cameroon earlier permitted Cameroonians from coronavirus infected countries to decide either to quarantine or not when other countries made that compulsory to stop the spread of the virus.
Even when Cameroon made that compulsory, Kebi regrets that suspected persons were hosted in hotels in towns rather that isolated places away from the population.
One billion francs cfa anti coronavirus solidarity fund put in place by the President has been rubbished by the advocate for democracy and good governance. He quotes other countries that are disbursing billions of francs cfa to curb the pandemic.
On why the process of combating coronavirus remains ineffective in Cameroon, he says the country’s top officials have earlier depended on medical evacuation and failing to invest in the health sector.
He quotes “Le Zenithe” saying over 1000 people mostly government officials, their family members and friends have benefited from medical evacuation between 2005 and 2020 in Cameroon amounting to hundreds of billions of francs cfa.
Mr. Kebi says the huge sum will have been used to invest humanly and materially in the health sector.
He concludes by saying “apart from the advisory from the World Health Organisation, i think we are already in a helpless situation”.
