Work at a technical secretariat put in place by opposition political parties for the collection of proposals on electoral reforms from political parties, civil society activists, professional groups and Cameroonians ends at 6:00pm today Thursday, April 15, 2021.

The proposals are to ameliorate Cameroon’s Electoral Code for a fair, transparent, free and acceptable election in Cameroon henceforth.

In a telephone interview with Mimi Mefo Info Thursday, April 15, Chief Barrister Ndong Christopher, Secretary-General of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) party said, ” We have received a good number of proposals from political parties, civil society groups and individuals. This shows the high appetite Cameroonians have for a good electoral code”.

The politician adds that many other political parties have been expressing the wish to join the seven opposition political parties that initiated the idea of putting in place proposals of an electoral code that will be submitted to the national assembly.

However, Barrister Ndong Christopher regrets that “only Progressive militants of the CPDM party” are showing concern for the project individually and not as the political party.

“We have not received any proposal from the CPDM party. It is the only party that is against an electoral reform in Cameroon,” Ndong said.

On April 1, 2021, seven opposition political parties in a joint press conference in Yaounde announced the putting in place of a technical secretariat to receive proposals on the reform of the electoral code for the interest of all.

The opposition parties in the project include the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), the Social Democratic Front (SDF), USDP, PCRN,PM,UMS and CDU parties. Among the things they want is an alternative electoral code with a single ballot voting system, two-round election, and biometric voting system.

The technical secretariat after collecting proposals will draft an alternative electoral code and propose amendments for the revision of the electoral code. This shall be submitted to the conference of political party leaders before a joint declaration on the final document shall be made public then submitted to the government.
